Class 4

A big welcome back to school for all children in Class 4. It is an exciting and full year ahead for us with lots of highlights along the way.

In English this term we are starting off looking at traditional tales and giving well known stories a modern spin. We are putting a big focus on spelling this year, we have already started by testing the children on 100 high frequency words. The aim of this is to make sure we have secure spelling foundations before quickly moving on to the Year 5 and 6 spelling list. We have a good internet based homework system for children to get involved in this year which will hopefully be fun for the children and help them to make good progress (more information to follow on this).

In maths we have stated by looking at place value: 5 digit numbers for year 5 and 7 digit numbers for year 6. It is important that the children are really secure on the value of each figure to help them achieve in the curriculum. We aim to make maths lessons interesting, real and as fun as possible.

In science we will be looking at animal life; how animals behave at different times of the year, particularly in our local area.

Our main topic is the Romans and we will be looking in depth at some of the things the Roman's did for us, as well as what life was like for the Romans and the key events of the time.

We are aiming to continue with our Forest School approach this term. Children will be able to continue having positive experiences outside the classroom and becoming closer to the natural world around them. the forest school approach is proven to build self esteem, team work, resilience and an appreciation of nature. This term we will be linking with our science topic and exploring how are local woodland changes in the autumn for both Flora and Fauna. We will also be designing and creating our own Forest Christmas decorations throughout the term.

In art we will be sketching in our forest as well as using forest materials to make Roman style mosaics. In PE we have employed top tennis coach Mark Franklin to work with the class. the children will have games with Ultimate soccer and in the second half of the term we will have dance with Hannah verity Dance Studios.

In geography we will be looking at North and South America, focusing on map skills and human geography.

In RE we will be looking at different religions and there similarities with Christianity.

In ICT the children will be learning how to programme their own computer games.

Mrs firth will be taking the children for French and Mrs. Summers will be covering music with the class.

I will also be sharing some of the English and maths teaching this year with Mrs. Armstrong, this allows me to take some forest school teaching into our youngest class whilst ensuring that class 4 receive excellent preparation in the key subjects for the upcoming year.

I am really looking for ward to this year.
